Gibb appeared as Ree Yees (and other background Gran characters), in Star Wars The Phantom Menace. He has finally been persuaded to attend a convention for a signing, and looks forward to meeting all the Star Wars fans.
Gibb Sutherland is an Equity performing name (when he joined Equity someone else had the audacity to already be using his real name!). Gibb was offered the the part in Star Wars by Second assistant Director Bernie Bellew, with whom he had worked behind the camera on Judge Dredd. At the time Gibb didn't consider it to be an acting role, and worked on the film using his given name.
There were three Gran in total, but Gibb was the most frequently used. Pretty much whenever you see a Gran in The Phantom Menace it's probably Gibb's creature in a different costume.
There were approximately fourteen fittings to create the creature and Gibb worked on set for fifteen days - however was not taken to Tunisia. As the creature suit was all enclosing (unlike any of the other creatures) there were issues of dehydration and exhaustion to deal with. Oxygen, cool air and isotonic drinks were always on standby and the actors were allowed to stay in the creature for no more than one and a half hours--by which time they all wanted out anyway!
